the voices! : the sound in our short film "irene"

Hello all! I am here to talk about our sound design and how we decided how to go about it. Two members of the Twister Sister productions spearheaded this process making sure that our communication was the best.

We decided to use Capcut as our editing software, while there are probably better programs, with our extreme time crunch and our busy schedules, we decided  that using CapCut would be the best since Kash had experience from doing other short videos for other projects and has used capcut before so it would take up less time learning how to do specific trick or tips since she knew how to use it already.

For recording, we used a dead cat microphone to capture good uninterupted sounds while getting rid of any unwanted outside noise.

Diegetic Sound

  • We decided that the majority of the sound that we want to use would be organic sounds coming from the microphones, so we had one of our friends, Tri, hold the mic at certain places so certain sounds can be picked up. Such as my footsteps when I walk, or the rustling of my bed covers.

  • Not to mention the ambiance that came from our classroom scene came from actual students who were just talking to make it sound like an authentic classroom

Non Diegetic Sound

  • For non diegetic sounds, we wanted to pick out the right music and the right white noise. Since we can only use copyright free music we had to work with specific tracks and music from youtube that said that they were free for use.

  • However, we tried to make sure we didn’t over do the non-diegetic sound to make sure the audience can focus on the actions and the natural sounds coming from the scenes that the mic picked up
