unpacking the ensemble: a side character analysis

Hey hey everyone! Today, we are here to talk about the side characters in our title sequence. Even though they aren’t the focus of the title sequence, it is still good to have fleshed-out side characters so you can see how they should react to the main character and if it is in character.

The killer:

The killer serves as our main protagonist. The killer is so vital, but you never actually see her face. This was done on purpose. Part of the genre of the title sequence is a murder mystery, so knowing the killer from the get-go kind of defeats the purpose. The calculated jump cuts end just before you see her face, emphasizing that no one ends up knowing who killed her. She is cold and intimidating, by just how strength and aggressiveness of her actions towards Irene emphasize this fact.

Henchmen:

The henchmen play a less important role, but they are important for symbolism. When they are with the killer in the women’s restroom to kill Irene, it isn’t meant to be just shock, but to also symbolizes breaking societal norms just to complete a dark task. They are supposed to seem inhumane, they are just there to help the killer do their job, to the point that not even Irene knows who they are. They exist just to help carry out what the killer wants, showing how twisted she it, to also emphasize how innocent Irene is.

Friends:

Irene has always been seen as just a popular girl. Always to be looked up to but never understood. Her friends are the only people who made her feel like a human, giving her depth to herself instead of what people precieve her as. They serve to humanize Irene. Their grief that they experience when they lose Irene further emphasize how she had an impact on people. showing that after everything that has happened, at her core, Irene is just a young girl who was dealt a bad card.
