film critic abby makes a reappearance: analyzing past student work research

Hello hello all! This is Media Mirage and I am back with another blog post for you all. Today I am going to look over some past student's movie trailers and discussing some strengths and weaknesses of each of the trailers.

Roll Call:

I really loved the concept, but the execution seemed really poor in my opinion. The camera work was extremely shakey and the appearances of the credits, it is made obvious that it was made through i-movie. I-movie isn't a bad editing software, but you can tell if someone doesn't have any experience with the app. But I love the use of the setting, and the lights for the police car were very creative. I also like the idea of using the mug shots in the introduction for the characters, as well as the little shpiel about what they were doing the night of the crime.

New Everything:

Right off the bat, I can appreciate the soundscape and layering sounds. However, the sound doesn't look realistic, other than the alarm clock, the steps on the ground don't match the sound of the wood so it doesn't look natural. It kind of reminds me of Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse with the use of the music and the main character walking. However, I kind got confused because the music started when he put on his headphones, but as he kept walking, the headphones were off so it makes no sense for the music to be there. It felt stuffy with no background music.

Dreamland:

I don't know why, but I really dislike the color grading. It looks too yellow and not like a dream. But, I really like the cut to black and the sudden appearance of the Wallgreens, leading you to wonder how you got from that point to the dream sequence. However, in the Walgreens I really like the color grading, the blue hues give very much a twilight vibe, making it seem uneasy and sterile. It evokes that kind of emotion to wonder what the character is doing walking into the Walgreens to late at night. I also love the chaotic sequence of gathering all of the medicine, it gives you the idea of what happened.

Dear Lover:

Based on the opening clips, I can tell this will be a very rom-com movie trailer. Especially with the title I can tell it's gonna be like that. I also like the use of the scenery, it reminds me of the book, "Where the Crawdads Sing", which is also a very romcom-esque book, other than the murder part- I love the use of a voice-over to show what she is saying and thinking. It was a very nice touch, and the background music added a really nice voice-over. The flashback scenes were really nice, a very montage feel and it shows what type of character the love interest was. Very condensed and sets the story up nicely.

xoxo,
